Enjoy Traditional Pierogies for Dinner from Peter and Pat's - Available at COSTCO

I love Pierogies. If you make them just right, their crispy on the outside with a soft cheesey centre. I like to dress mine up with sautéed peppers, onions and sausages and drip them in sour cream. Yum.

But, I recently had a reality check when I took a friend to the CNE (for those not from Toronto, it’s the Canadian National Exhibition and it features mouth-watering carnival food). We were at the food court with a list of treats that we never get to eat, and on his list, was pierogies. Like, excuse me, what?! You don’t get that at home? Obviously, we ordered some and he loved it.

For those who’ve never had pierogies before, they’re basically the dumpling for Eastern Europeans. They are made by wrapping pockets of unleavened dough around a savory or sweet filling such as potato, sauerkraut, ground meat, cheese, and fruits. The dumplings may be served with a topping, such as melted butter, sour cream, or fried onion, or combinations of those ingredients. Pierogies are considered a national dish in countires like Poland, Ukraine and Slovakia.

And now, you can enjoy pierogies just as babcia intended it to be, here in Canada with Peter & Pat’s Pierogies. They use use a 60-year-old family recipe, made with 100% real potato, 100% natural ingredients and 100% family tradition.

Pierogies should be cooked from frozen (most recommended), or from partially thawed. Traditionally, they are boiled in water and then pan fried for a few minutes so that they get a little crispy. The healthier option would be spreading them on a baking sheet and popping them in the oven for 15 minutes. That’s how we decided to cook our Potato, Bacon and Cheddar Cheese pierogies and they were SO GOOD.

How we prepared our Pierogies:

[if !supportLists]1. [endif]Lightly coat the baking sheet with oil (we used a spray oil)

[if !supportLists]2. [endif]Place the perogies on the baking sheet, not touching each other

[if !supportLists]3. [endif]At 350C, bake in the oven for 10 minutes

[if !supportLists]4. [endif]Melt some butter with dry oregano, rosemary, and thyme seasonings in a cup

[if !supportLists]5. [endif]Flip the pierogies after 10 minutes, and apply the seasoned butter onto the top of the perogies

[if !supportLists]6. [endif]Separately, sauté peppers, onions and sausages on the stove top (you can bake these as well)

[if !supportLists]7. [endif]Serve all together with a spoon of sour cream.

Pierogies make for a great meal, or snack, because they are low fat, low cholesterol, all-natural, and made with no preservatives. You can find Peter & Pat’s Pierogies across Canada at all COSTCO stores. Happy eating!
