I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I didn’t barely pass High School Science – I’m a writer, science and math is on the other side of my brain. Even though I don’t know much about science, I do know a thing or two about pH balance and why it’s so important for our skin. So, if you bare with me, I’ll break it down for you to a level that we all can understand – especially if science isn’t your thing.
Do you remember in science class when you had a strip of paper that you would dip into a solution and it would turn either red or blue? That paper was a scale that measured the Potential of Hydrogen – or pH – of the liquid. Potential of Hydrogen is a measurement of the degree of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution as measured on a scale (pH scale) of 0 to 14. The midpoint of 7.0 on the pH scale represents a neutral solution that is neither acid or alkaline (so, 7 = water). Numbers below 7.0 indicate acidity; numbers greater than 7.0 indicate alkalinity.
Now that we’ve got the science part covered, why is knowing about pH important to our skin? Most skin problems occur when our pH is out of balance. Typically, healthy skin has a slight acidic pH average of 5.5. Anything higher than that would mean that your skin is high in alkaline, resulting in dry skin. Oily skin is categorized as too acidic and low in pH.
Knowing your pH level will help you when you’re shopping for moisturizers and cleansers for your skin. Have you ever walked into Shoppers Drug Mart, started to stare at the back of bottles, and wonder “is my skin oily or dry?” But, if you want to truly help you skin from the inside out, pHisoderm’s unique formulas contains pH balancing ingredients that restores the skin’s pH balance. When you can reach that sweet spot of 5.5 on the pH scale, your skin won’t be too oily or too dry, resulting in beautiful, healthy looking skin. Plus, pHisoderm’s cleansers are soy, gluten and cruelty free.

Most of us don’t have a pH scale laying around in our bedrooms, so what are some tell-tale signs that your skin has low pH or needs a pH boost?
Low pH: Oily skin occurs when the skin’s pH levels are too low (acidic). When skin is in this state, it not only causes oily skin, but can result in irritation and redness.
High pH: Dry skin occurs when the skin’s pH levels are too high (alkaline). When skin is in this state, it not only causes dry skin, but can result in blemishes and inflammation.
