Tuesday nights on ABC Spark just got a lot more fashionable.
Inspired by the life of former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, the Bold Type gives viewers a chance to see what life is like for those working at the global women’s magazine Scarlet. Former interns, current employees, and best friends Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee) and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) are all navigating the world of Scarlet as well as their lives in New York City. Through their time at the magazine, they’re learning to find their voices and identity. It feels almost like Sex and the City/The Carrie Diaries meets 2017 with a bit more reality.
A big focus of the show is "smashing the patriarchy" and empowerment through feminism. Instead of pitting the main characters against each other, or having a terrifying, power-hungry editor-in-chief constantly tearing everyone down (a la Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada), these women are navigating the world together, standing up for their beliefs and values in the world of New York City.
Here’s what to expect when you tune in:
Fashion: Several scenes throughout the first two episodes are set in the fashion closet at Scarlet Magazine. Between their business attire, casual clothes and event wear, all of the characters in the show are always dressed to impress.
Love: While we’re only two episodes in, there hasn’t any serious relationships going on in the girls’ love lives so far. However, there is definitely eye candy throughout the show. Sparks have been flying for all three of the ladies, and not just with the opposite sex.
Friendship: It was introduced that Jane, Kat and Sutton all met four years prior as interns at Scarlet but now are best friends who have moved their way up to real, paying positions. These three truly show how much they care for each other through tough, awkward and celebratory moments.
Deeper subjects: Throughout interviews, Joanna Coles, who is also executive producer on the show, discusses how she wanted viewers to see the reality of working at a magazine instead of just the fashion spreads and gossip drama most TV shows feature. This can definitely be seen throughout the storylines of both released episodes which feature a storyline about sexual identity as well as the strict rules some religions have on women.
The Bold Type airs on ABC Spark Tuesdays at 9pm EST.
