Julia (Rosario Dawson), an editor, moves from San Francisco to Southern California to be with her gorgeous new fiancé, David (Geoff Stults). As if Julia wasn’t already feeling comfortable living in a small town, where she seems to be the only person of colour, and everyone knows everyone, she meets David’s tightly wound, ultra-WASP ex-wife, Tessa (Katherine Heigl), and the plot thickens.
Although they divorced two years ago, Tessa continues to exert control over David through their daughter, Lily (Isabella Kai Rice), whom she’s molding into a little version of herself. Her love will never be forgotten.
Julia is the opposite of Tessa. She’s a go-with-the-flow, free spirited, fun person and Tessa, being of the upmost Type-A personality, can't handle the change. She wants her family back and she'll do anything to get them back. So, she steals Julia’s phone at a party and hacks into it with impressive techno-stalker finesse; inside, she finds some sexy photos and a folder marked “legal,” which contains a copy of the restraining order Julia took out against an abusive ex. (The moral of this story is to never store legal documents on your phone.)
Tessa uses this information to create a fake Facebook account and stage a fake online affair with her abusive ex. As Tessa continues to push Julia to her breaking point, Julia fights back by digging up Tessa’s past and bringing it back her haunt her.
Who will win? The uptight, emotionally unstable nutjob or the new “cool girl”?
The Breakdown:
Don’t Watch the Trailer: This is a female-focused psycho-stalker thriller – emphasis on the thriller. The element of surprise is so necessary and I feel like the trailer gives away too much. Go in with a clear, empty mind!
Thrilling Thrills Director Denise Di Novi, the creative producer of Edward Scissorhand, delivered on the film’s climax—featuring fireplace pokers, duct tape, and a drag queen-worthy bloodstained caftan. She also pushes the sex scenes and bloody violence further than other recent thrillers of this type.
Cliché Story: While the movie had some great highlights, it’s biggest flaw was the story and dialogue. We’ve seen a handful of thrillers were someone get’s jealous of someone else’s life and turns into a psycho stalker/killer. Oh well, what’s one more added to the list?
Katherine Heigl: I would recommend this movie just for Katherine’s perfect depiction of a physco Barbie ex – the ultimate ex of all ex’s.
