5 Motivational Tips to Keep You Working Out

Working out is hard but it’s even harder when you’ve rarely ever done it before or just simply can’t find the motivation to do it. However, some things just need to be done. Here are some tips on how to get into the workout groove whether you’re new to the gym scene or simply can’t find the motivation to do so:

1. Don’t jump right into it

Finding the perfect gym is like finding the perfect gym – some trial and error is necessary before you find “the one”. Instead of signing a yearlong membership to the first gym you try or the most popular gym chain, try a trial run instead. Most gyms offer a free (multi)day pass so you can try out the facility before committing fully. You can also find good deals on discount sites such as Groupon for monthly passes to smaller gyms throughout your area.

2. Understand your goals

There are no wrong answers to what your gym goals may be (unless you’re there to pick up guys, in which case I’m sure there’s a cheaper and less sweaty way to do so, but hey, do you), Ask yourself, why are you there? Do you want to gain muscle? Endurance? To get active/in shape? Whatever the goal may be, focus on it. Knowing that you are reaching for this outcome will help you stay motivated and remind you to keep going to get the results.

3. Don’t let the pain scare you away

No pain, no gain, right? Let’s face it, working out is going to hurt. It shouldn’t hurt in a way where you feel like you broke a bone, but more a weirdly satisfying pain that still hurts when you move. Don’t let this feeling scare you off or give you an excuse to put off your next workout. Those muscles aren’t going to hurt any less next time if you don’t build up their strength at all. Eventually, the pain won’t be as bad after each workout and you’ll learn how to cope.

4. Get into a routine

Easier said than done, I know. But try to set specific days you want to go to the gym and commit to when you’re going to go. These days can be right after class, or your days off, or even try to book that time frame off in your schedule so nothing will get in the way of going to the gym.

5. Don’t compare yourself to others

With all the #thinspo or #fitspo going around on Instagram and Twitter, it can be hard to not compare your body to others’. At the gym, it’s even harder when you see people lifting heavy weights with such toned muscles. But who knows how long they’ve been working out for? This is your journey, not anyone else’s. It takes time to achieve a goal, fitness included.
