How to Transition Your Summer Foundation for Fall

Summer to fall can be a tough transition in more ways than one. You trade swimsuits for sweaters, casual reads for textbooks and, most importantly, your light coverage for a heavier foundation. "Early fall is a tricky time for makeup because the weather can vary between leftover summer heat and humidity and the first cool, dry days of the season," says Robin Black, makeup artist and founder of BeautyIsBoring.com. But if you haven't quite figured out your go-to foundation formula yet (after all, there are tons of makeup bases to choose from), we enlisted her help to identify how to find the best coverage to complement your skin getting used to the cooler weather. Below, her must-have tips for a flawless base:

Amp up the exfoliation: "Even if you piled on the sunscreen all summer long, your skin is bound to get more vitamin D than the rest of the year. That means that as the weather turns cooler, your skin will naturally start to shed the top layer of color you accumulated while being outdoors. You can help your skin adapt quicker by doing some gentle at-home exfoliation treatments to slough off dead skin, which will help create an even foundation look."

Prepare for the unpredictable fall weather: "You should choose a foundation that works for both your skin type and the weather. This will help your makeup last all day and it will also help you avoid breakouts. If it's a humid day and you have oily skin, choose a satin or velvet finish to tone down a shiny T-zone (heavier options will clog pores). The Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick is one of my favorites because the pigment is really concentrated so a little goes a long way. It lets your skin breathe, yet still gives you great, semi-matte, buildable coverage. If it's a cool, dry day, try a full-coverage foundation — I love Marc Jacobs Beauty Genius Gel Super-Charged Foundation. The gel-like formula is very moisturizing and offers just the perfect balance between dewy and matte skin. In general, velvety finishes feel more polished and sophisticated for fall than your super-matte formulas of summer."

Find hydrating ingredients: "Be mindful of finding a formula with moisturizing ingredients to give your skin the hydration it needs during the cooler, dryer fall months. I love gel foundations and liquid formulas in the fall for this reason. A plump, smooth base will give you an even foundation look."

Try mixing two different shades: "If you're still showing off your leftover tan, try mixing your summer and new fall foundation shades to create a middle tone. Or you can lightly apply your summer foundation all over and then apply in your lighter fall shade just on the high points of your face. As your tan fades, keep adjusting the balance of the two products until you are eventually just using the fall color. If you have the budget to buy two shades, then get one that matches your current skin color plus one that is a shade lighter. You can mix them in-between seasons to get an exact match."
