Dave Franco and Emma Roberts team up in a Truth or Dare (actually, just dare) cyber competition that will take the audience on one hell of a ride.
Summary:
I think once in our lifetime we all felt like Venus aka Vee (Emma Roberts). She’s in her senior year of high school and knows that she wants to become a photographer, she’s very good at it, but also knows that her mother will not approve. Then we’re introduced to her BFF Sydney (Emily Meade), the outgoing cheerleader, who pushes Vee out of her comfort zone. Feeling like she needs to take more risks, Vee logs into Nerve as a “player” – asides from a “watcher” which her friend makes her out to be.
The game is simple: players are given dares from the watchers for money. If you don’t complete a dare, you lose all of your money and (my personal favourite rule) snitches get stitches. Complete more dares and gain more watchers to advance to the final round. Vee starts off with a simple dare, kissing a stranger, and that’s where she bumps (with lips) into Ian (Dave Franco). The two are then continuously dared to do things together, and as the stakes get higher they’re pushed to their limits. Can Vee safely complete all her dares without compromising who she is, or losing her life?
Conclusion:
This movie is more than meets the eye. I watched the movie because I love Dave Franco, duh, and it was really nice to see him in a serious, daredevil role. The moral behind this film is that watchers have just as much control, if not more, as players. The watchers have a lot of power because they’re voting to give players these intense dares and they’re continuously watching and filming the players fulfill these dangerous acts. If a player commits a crime, gets seriously injured or even dies, watchers have the power to submit these videos to the police, or even stop the dares before happening, but they don’t because of the third rule: snitches get stitches.
Overall, the movie was fun to watch with a few plot twists (like seeing Machine Gun Kelly do some crazy things). Emma Roberts and Dave Franco make a great team that you are always rooting for to win. They have great chemistry that is believable and keeps the movie going. The end of the film will really make you start questioning how seriously invested you are into playing Pokémon Go (what a coincidence these are released not too far apart…).
